Cognitive defusion, also known as deliteralization, is a technique used in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help people cope with uncomfortable or unhelpful thoughts and feelings. It is a useful technique for people with depression and anxiety, as uncomfortable and unhelpful thoughts and feelings are often a part of their experience. What is Cognitive Defusion? Cognitive Defusion is a set of mental thinking strategies and activities which reduce the impact of distressing and unwanted thoughts. Cognitive defusion’s purpose is straightforward – make you see the thoughts for what they are – a string of words, not judgments. We’re constantly getting hooked by our thoughts, beliefs and feelings, getting lost in the drama.
